Data Methodology & Reference

Why are CFOs considered the "Smart Money"?
CFOs manage the balance sheet and cash flow. They know better than anyone if the company is undervalued relative to its assets and earnings. A CFO buy is typically a Value Investing signal, suggesting the stock is cheap.
Is it legal for CFOs to buy before earnings reports?
No. Insiders are restricted by "Blackout Periods" before earnings. Therefore, seeing a CFO buy immediately after a price drop following an earnings report is a powerful signal that the market reaction was excessive.
How does P/E Ratio relate to CFO trades?
You will often see CFOs buying when the P/E (Price-to-Earnings) ratio hits historical lows. Our tracker highlights these value disconnects, showing you when financial officers believe the multiple is too compressed.
What is the difference between a CFO Buy and a Director Buy?
Directors are often outside advisors with less visibility into daily operations. The CFO is an operational executive. Historically, C-Suite (CEO/CFO) trades have outperformed independent Director trades in predictive accuracy.
What does it mean if the CFO is selling while the CEO is buying?
This "Mixed Signal" can be confusing. However, we generally prioritize the Buying signal. Selling can be for personal liquidity (buying a house, taxes), whereas Buying is almost always for profit. Check the "Net Value" flow to see the overall sentiment.
Can CFO buying predict M&A (Mergers & Acquisitions)?
Sometimes. While trading on non-public info is illegal, a CFO knows the company's "intrinsic value" best. If they believe the company is a prime takeover target at current prices, they may accumulate shares to benefit from future appreciation.
